Egypt's public prosecutor said on Tuesday a police officer shot and killed woman protester Shaimaa Sabbagh, whose death in January caused an international outcry when footage of it spread online. The prosecutor referred the officer to the criminal court, a rare action against the security forces, who have been accused by human rights groups of abuses against Islamists and liberal activists. The government denies the charges. Sabbagh was shot dead during protests a day before the anniversary of the popular uprising that ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011. “The public prosecution's investigation uncovered that the death of [Sabbagh] occurred after she was hit with birdshot which one of the police officers of the Central Security Forces fired in her direction and other protesters to break up a demonstration in Talaat Harb square,” the prosecutor's statement said. Egypt has mounted a crackdown on Islamists and secular activists since the army ousted the country's first freely elected president, Islamist Mohamed Morsi, in 2013.
